About the project

Title: Green Infrastructure In Urban Areas - Innovative Educational Course

Project number: 2024-1-PL01-KA220-HED-000247397

Start date: 2024-09-01

End date: 2027-08-31

Budget: 400 000.00 EUR

GINA project seeks to address the growing global challenge of water management amidst climate change, particularly in urban environments. With more frequent extreme events like floods and droughts impacting water availability, Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) such as rain gardens and green infrastructure offer effective remedies for stormwater management, groundwater restoration, and urban climate adaptation. However, barriers in practical implementation hinder their full potential. This project aims to overcome those challenges by introducing a blended-learning course designed to equip higher education (HE) students, local authorities, and educators with the knowledge and skills to design, implement, and manage NBS solutions.

The project’s objectives are multifaceted. First, it will provide comprehensive education on NBS to local governments, enhancing their understanding of these solutions through e-learning modules and social media outreach. Second, it will prepare HE students for careers in NBS by offering practical skills through international schools and innovative blended-learning methods, such as gamification and project-based learning. Third, the course will empower HE teachers with innovative teaching techniques, fostering cross-border collaboration and research. This will ensure the transfer of cutting-edge knowledge to future professionals and enhance local governments' capacity to integrate NBS into urban planning and investment strategies.

The project is innovative in its approach, combining advanced engineering methods with ecosystem service principles and circular economy strategies. Its focus on practical NBS design, monitoring, and social engagement fills a gap in current educational offerings, aligning with the needs of the labor market and supporting climate-neutral urban development. By enhancing collaboration among European cities, the project will strengthen efforts toward sustainable, resilient urban futures.
