What can we learn from science? - green infrastructure poilicies

In 2020, researchers T. Liberalesso et al. conducted a global review of municipal policies aimed at promoting green roofs and green walls, spanning 113 cities across 19 countries, because cities around the world are enthusiastically encouraging green infrastructure—but the strategies vary! Analyzing 143 incentive policies, the study shows that most incentives focus on green roofs rather than green walls. Europe and North America lead the way with the highest concentration of policies. Cities used six main types of incentive tools, including tax reductions, financing options, fast-track permits, sustainability certification, legal obligations, and streamlined administrative processes. Financial subsidies and legal obligations emerged as the most common levers for action.

Why would they bother? Urban green infrastructure reduces energy costs, improves biodiversity, and mitigates heat island effects, yet high upfront costs still slow adoption. Smart incentives help bridge that gap by aligning public goals with private investment decisions.
