Recent studies from Germany and across Europe are helping us better understand—and now actively support—the insects that make ecosystems thrive. A landmark German study revealed a 75% reduction in flying insect biomass over 27 years, which has sparked an unprecedented wave of innovation, conservation, and public engagement. The IUCN European Red List of Bees found that 1 in 10 bee species is facing extinction, and over 56% still lack complete population trend data. Recognizing these gaps has galvanized efforts to restore habitats and rebuild taxonomic expertise—especially since 60.7% of data-deficient species are likely threatened and can greatly benefit from targeted action. This new clarity has empowered Europe to accelerate pollinator protection. The EU’s biodiversity strategy now aims for a full recovery of pollinators by 2030, promoting sustainable farming, healthier landscapes, and nature-supportive urban design. With these insights, communities can adopt practices that boost pollination, soil fertility, and ecosystem balance—many centred around Nature-Based Solutions that offer thriving homes for our flying allies.
